Poetic Documentary

A poetic documentary is a type of documentary filmmaking that includes the use of some of these techniques and styles:

  • Rhythm
  • Aesthetics
  • Personally stylised
  • Abstract
  • Symbolic/metaphoric
  • Emotion
  • Non linear narrative (playful)
  • Lyrical
  • Unity of form
  • Memory
An example of a poetic documentary is Blight - John Smith 1994

With the use of the juxtaposition of sounds and images, and breaking up the interviews to then echo the house being turn down, it creates a really rhythmic feel to the documentary, especially with the repetition of certain words and phrases.
